Moving to another country has its excitement and challenges. I arrived in a place where I didn’t necessarily speak the language, didn’t know the local customs and felt confused with the “differences”. It took me quite a while to adjust to my new life personally, and at the same time I was trying to build my business. It was a steep learning curve and I had so many questions, yet I didn’t know where to turn.
How do I set up a local business? Are there any legal procedures that need to be followed? What sort of business should I set up? How do I find the best accountant? How do I put all of these pieces together in the shortest amount of time? I’m now in a new country, who can I trust to support and direct me? With every answer, more questions arose.
So I asked around, got a few recommendations and then started reaching out to these new connections. Some were spot-on while others were a complete disaster! It took me a while to find the right people, figure out the correct process and finally get settled and sorted. And I won’t lie, it was very tough and trying at times! But I can assure that it was all worth while as I look back now, a successful businesswoman from Bath, England now living the dream in New York City!
Along the way, I realized that there was an entire community of people who had all experienced the same roller coaster as I did in trying to set up a business in the USA. They all wished they had the support they needed to avoid the pitfalls and get on a successful path sooner rather than later. If only there was one place we could have all gone to that would have connected us to all the right people and all the right places in the USA.
